Encouragement for Us Writers


Writing is an art. As much as a painter allows the images they have to be shown on the canvas, the writer allows their soul to pour out in their manuscript.

As an art form, writing allows us to express parts of ourselves that are not visible on the outside. This is the beauty of it. It is a part of ourselves that has been waiting to surface, but may have been buried by years of self doubt.

How many times have we said to ourselves "Why would I write that down? Who would want to read this?" What writer cannot relate to this?

Here is the beautiful truth now emerging. We are coming to this time in our lives when we cannot help but let these ideas and thoughts out of us. The time has come for us to allow our beautiful light to shine.

Here are some things that I have been doing that may encourage and inspire you.
1. Writing is a practice. The more I do it the more I want to do it. When I delve into that part of my soul I am amazed by the things I learn about myself.
2. Support is critical. As a writer, I need to immerse myself in a community of other writers who may be dealing with similar issues. For me, social media (especially Twitter these days) is a huge source of support. I need to connect on a regular basis with those who will understand my issues around self doubt and remaining productive.
3. Calendar my time for me. This one is challenging. My life (and I'm sure I'm not alone) is so busy. The ability to get distracted by other things will prevent me from sitting down and writing. I must block out time in my schedule to be with my thoughts and just write.
4. Remember why we write. It's because we love it. It's therapeutic. It's giving voice to a part of us that maybe we felt was not acceptable to others. It's freedom. Truly, it is our chance to be ourselves in this world.

There you have it. This is my encouragement to all of your writers (including myself) who needed a little reminder today to keep writing. The world needs to hear what we have to say. I hope you have a wonderful and creative day!

Staying the Course

How many of us can relate to being distracted? How can we not? Every five seconds there is another notification on our smart phones. And, life just being what it is will always be presenting us with another situation to deal with. It's life. It's reality. It seems that it has always been a struggle for me to simply stick with whatever project I embark on. Whenever I start something, it seems that the follow through becomes challenging. Maybe there is some psychological issue I could look at. Maybe I'm just human. Maybe it's just normal. To stay the course in life I believe requires a commitment to the thing we set out to do. It requires saying to ourselves that we will let nothing ultimately stand in our way. And, this commitment has to be so important to us that we will not let the distractions through us off the path. Not Waiting Anymore

Waiting.  Always waiting. Waiting for the right time to change jobs. Waiting for the right time to find a new home. Waiting to lose weight, to have enough in the bank, to look better, etc. There is always a reason not to act. I believe that much of my delaying has been about waiting for that perfect sign from the universe that it was now ok to act on whatever I desired. I believed that the universe would indeed give me a sign that it was now the right time to act. I thought that there would be some great sign to point me in the right direction. Well...
