A Spiritual Awakening on Aisle 5
What’s up with the hoarding of toilet paper? I mean really.
I went to the supermarket to buy groceries with my wife last week, and all of the toilet paper was gone. Why?
There is a spiritual reality to be learned from this interesting phenomenon.
.
We have a fear of running out. We believe that if they don't get their big supply of toilet paper that there won’t be enough available. The hoarding is about the fear of not being taken care of. It manifests in the hoarding of toilet paper.
The irony is that when people hoard we do run out.
Where else does this principal apply in life?
It shows up in relationships when we try to control someone else, because we think if we don’t they will leave. It shows up in our jobs when we take a job we don’t like, because we think a better job will not come along. It shows up when we eat food that is not good for us, because we think we cannot afford better food.
This idea of deprivation is powerful, and it is pervasive. Especially in time of fear and desperation. It seems that the worst of us comes out. We get selfish and fearful. We are not thinking of the long term consequences of hoarding supplies that could affect other people. We are thinking of taking care of ourselves.
Is it possible to have a spiritual awakening as a result of this toilet paper situation we are having?
I propose yes.
The awakening occurs when we accept that our needs will be met when we relax and allow a loving Force to take care of us. It’s about trust. Do we believe that all of our needs will be met? Do we believe that if we let go and relax, that every problem in our life will have a workable solution?
It’s not about the toilet paper.
And, it’s totally about the toilet paper.
It’s what toilet paper represents. In this moment with COVID-19 we are being provided a wonderful opportunity to ask the questions that are so critical to our spiritual growth. Do we believe we will be OK? Do we believe we are protected? Do we believe that there is a plan for our good? Do we believe that our needs will get met?
I hope you find some toilet paper soon. More importantly, I hope that you find that part of yourself that knows that all is well.
