I'm Learning About the Birds and the Bees
Every day my wife and I visit our beautiful butterfly garden. There is a bird feeder that was installed by some generous soul. I appreciate this kind gesture, because we get to watch the beautiful birds that land there.
The birds swoop down from their perch on the nearby tree, landing gently on the feeder.
They know how to take turns. They don’t barge in front of each other. The birds sitting in the trees wait patiently for the bird that is on the feeder to leave. The birds take their share of food, and then leave to go back to another tree. Every bird seems to get enough.
Under the feeder we watch the squirrel taking advantage of the seeds that fall. They trust that this will happen on a regular basis, so they are also in the nearby tree waiting patiently next to the birds that are next to take flight.
Next to the feeder are some beautiful flowering plants that are waiting to be pollinated by the industrious bees. The bees know that they have an important duty and are eager to help this beautiful garden flourish. Flying from one flower to another, the bees are the connector that the flowers need to survive. Without these beautiful carriers of life, the flowers would die.
Watching the birds and the bees reminds me in a very deep way of the beautiful dependence that we have on each other.
We are cross pollinating each other’s hearts and souls when we share kind words with each other. We are carrying the hopes and dreams that we have to another soul.
Some of us walk around with the false belief that we are not important in this world, and that our role is less important than someone else’s.
Again, study the birds and the bees.
Somewhere in their spirit they have an urgency to complete their task. They don’t have a conscious awareness of what is giving them that impulse, but it is there. They know that to go to the next flower, or to fly from the next tree to the feeder is coming from their desire to survive.
We have the same innate pull from within to care for one another.
Watch the response to any natural disaster and you will witness strangers coming together to save each other’s lives. People who have never met will band together to help each other.
Two months ago, I was witness to a person driving into a retention pond on a side of a very busy highway. Before I could stop my car, three people had already jumped in to save the woman from drowning after she escaped from her car. It was incredible! None of these people had met before, but they were willing to risk their lives to save a stranger’s life. I was in awe of these beautiful souls to put their needs aside to help someone else.
I wish I had that level of altruism in my heart. I pray that someday that I would be able to be in a situation to save someone’s life like that. And, I pray that if I need that kind of help that there would be those who would do that for me.
What I am learning from the birds and the bees is that the soul of every living being wants to be connected. We want to care. We want to extend kindness. It is in our DNA to love each other.
I am grateful for everything that you do for humanity. I pray that the birds and the bees will remind you of your importance in this world.
We need each other.
I’m glad you are alive.
